live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. at 6:00, a look outside in san francisco, this is a view from the camera, the bay area is waking up to frigid temperatures and we will check with leyla gulen and the forecast to see how cold the temperatures will be outside. >> developing now, the search will resume this morning for a bay area pilot and his family after the plane goes missing in the idaho wilderness during the thanksgiving holiday welcome. >> breaking news in boston where hundreds of firefighters remain on the scene of a huge seven alarm fire. the difficult challenge they face since they tried to get the plane out. >> good morning, everyone, i am katie marzullo. >> at 6:00, a challenges that we will face this morning is the cold weather. >> we will check with leyla gulen, and wouldn'ty, too, -- and windy. we have high clouds from the first string of the cold snap

from the pacific northwest and behind it a cold air mass from alaska in the southbound direction. we do have reports of precipitation in monterey and you may wake up to a little bit of moisture on the roads but, really, not very much. it will be mostly dry for the better part of the week and from the kgo program -- exploritorium, it is winds at 20 miles per hour with isolated shower possible and freezing cold the next few afternoons will we have cooler temperatures in oakland and san francisco and 51 in san francisco, and oakland is 52. for much of the south bay, it is 52. half moon bay is chilly at 50 degrees. headed to the roads, we will see what is happening in traffic. we have a couple of issues including a brushfire burning off the side of the freeway in oakland and if you are traveling along 580 at coolidge you could

find it, so we have c.h.p. crews headed out there not causing any delays but there is a high wind advisory for the bay bridge so there are gusts across the bay. outside we go, this is a picture of the bay bridge toll plaza where you can see the traffic is stacking up coming away from the macarthur maze and coming out of oakland and into san francisco, the drive will take you in excess of ten minutes. >> the first of the bay area shelters now are open for the season, just in time for the deep freeze, with amy hollyfield in sunnyvale. in the south bay they have an increase in the number of people needing shelter. >> the number of homeless people have gone up 8 percent, 18 percent in san jose and they refer to what you can get at the shelter as too hot and a cot. two hot meals and a place to

sleep. the non-protest agency provides the shelters in the safe bay with 9 highest homeless populations in the country. the shelters help but they are not enough. >> at any time there are over 7,000 homeless and in our community we only have a thousand shelter beds, possibly 1,200 beds. >> the shelters are open from 6:00 at night until 6:00 a.m. and last night was the first night so it wasn't too crowded but they expect the crowds to pick up tomorrow when the cold hits. alert free of charge at abc7 news.com/app. >> a search in the idaho wilderness resumes for an executive and the family and the

system engine plane disappeared after taking off from oregon where dale smith spent thanksgiving day headed for montana but reported engine trouble over idaho. he is the president of serial tech a data storage company and a veteran pilot who often flies his single evening -- engine and is meticulous about safety and capable of surviving elements. >> matt will tell us about a clue helping crews narrow the search area. >> we have breaking news from boston with firefighters battling a seven alarm fire that broke out overnight. this is new video from the scene with the fire starting at 1:30 our time in a five-story build ing in this neighborhood that spread from the first floor and ingulfed the whole building.

the films are said to be under control but cruise worried it could collapse. there is no word on the cause of the fire. >> new details this morning on the deadly train derailment in new york city, for the first time, we are now hearing from family members of one of the four passengers who was killed on sunday in the bronx. one was on the way to work when the train derailed. his three sons spoke. he because not a victim. he was more. he was a loving father, a great dad, best friend, uncle... >> the ntsb says the train appeared it have been going too far and trafficking at 82 miles per hour going interest a 30 miles per hour curve. >> president obama is facing falling support in blue state california. a just released poll finds only 51 percent in california approve of the president's job

>> today, the e cigarettes could be added to new legislation to places. the federal government does not regulate the e-cigarettes so the states and local governments are developing their own rules. >> a controversial gas pipeline on the peninsula is back up and running again. pg&e restarted the line yesterday that runs along a four mile stretch under britain avenue. the state public utility commissions wants it know why it took pg&e ten months to report a significant record discrepancy on the pipeline. faulty records are cited as a contributing factor to the 2010 san produce know pipeline explosion that killed eight petroleum. the commission will decide on december 19 on a fine for pg&e which will be other $6 million or $17 million.

palo alto street sweepers planning to take to the streets to oppose a plan by the stir counsel to contract out their services and reduce the frequency of service. the palo alto street sweepers plan to protest at 5:30 out of city hall before the city council begins their meeting. the city council is considering a plan to reduce street sweeping services to once every other week. >> done any work outside? today you will need to bundle up. leyla gulen? >> as we get into the evening hours and we hook from the camera to san francisco and the financial district, it is clear. you do not have the fog from yesterday. we have high clouds. it will be partly cloudy for good part of the day. it is windy. at 21 miles per hour wind in oakland and 15 at sfo. winds have calmed down. 25-miles-per-hour gusts at half moon bay and calmer in mountain views and gusts up to 24 miles per hour in san jose clearing

out the cloud cover to the south and east us bringing precipitation can now we see it in monterey which is not measurable and east of i-five. the next 12 hours as we head out the door bundle up, at 48 degrees is the we temperature inland and 52 around the bay and 52 along the coast and it warms up to the mid-50's by the afternoon with a major cool down tonight and freeze warnings are coming up and we will talk about that in a little bit but, first, traffic. we have a big rig five and this just came in in the c.h.p. and they are reporting a big rig open fire, southbound along 880 at 262. first i will take you into marin county toward petaluma northbound 101 at washington street, we have this wreck blocking a lane and causing slowing headed away from 116 with southbound traffic pumping up -- bunching up is slow down.

the ground when you weather up and that will be the best it. looking to the bay bridge we have dry conditions but windy, as well, with the gusts up to 20 miles per hour. before i get to this i want to talk about the front coming in so a slight chance of precipitation and behind it is lots of cold dry air coming in from alaska and that is what is going to spark the we freeze warnings for the entire bay area but, especially, for the north by. it is also bringing windy weather, as well, at 21-miles-per-hour gusts in oakland and up to 23 in napa and along the coast, at 25-miles-per-hour gusts at half moon bay and sfo is at 15 miles per hour gusts and there is a bay bridge wind add risery -- advise so be careful. it will blow out the cloud

cover. tuesday, later tonight and into tomorrow morning, we are not going to have any clouds whatever. that is why it will be very cold especially overnight with the frost advisories. mostly sunshine but it will be cold with highs across the state in the mid-60 for southern california and up to 72 degrees this palm springs and in northern california topping out in the mid-to-upper 50's and 36 degrees at lake tahoe with measurable 3" of snow falling over the next couple of days. our lies across the bay area you can see in the south bay 56 degrees in san jose and mid-50's for the peninsula, as well, and along the coast, cooler at 52 degrees in pacifica and 55 downtown san francisco partly cloudy skies in the north bay and we will be in the mid-to-lower 50's and warmer in the east bay and upward to 56 degrees in antioch, not very warm at all and overnight temperatures are in the upper to

mid-40's and chilly in the north bay, and the seven-day forecast shows freeze want coming up tonight and into tomorrow morning so watch for those sensitive plans and by friday, though, we could have a chance of rain that will last through the beginning of next week. as we head into traffic we have the issues the wind advise for the bay bridge with high seeded -- high sided vehicle, a big-rig fire has a lane blocked with tires on fire. the fire department and c.h.p. hopefully can get it put out. northbound 101 at washington street, through poet plume, we have we -- through petaluma, it is looking pretty good. >> hollywood mourns the passing of paul walker. >> a tribute from his big screen

in the north bay and we are looking at cool temperatures not topping out above 50 degrees for santa rosa with the seven-day forecast in a moment but, first, traffic, i will see what is happening, with a few hiccups and brand new problem through hayward southbound along the nimitz, this stall is blocking a lane and causing heavy backups away from 238 and a solo vehicle crash along highway one through pack can causing delays as you make the move in the north direction. >> we are following developing news, the weather should improve enough to let search crews comb the idaho wilderness for a missing bay area family whose plane want down on sunday. our news reporter is in san francisco with that. matt? >> we are half an hour away from sunrise there in idaho and that is when rescuers are going to resume their search again for dale smith and his family.

at the church in san jose, friends are praying for the family and dale saying if anyone can survive a situation lick this it and him. the single engine aircraft went missing in hide oh on sunday and the plane was carrying four other family members from oregon to montana. the pilot reports engine trouble can asked for coordinants to an airstrip. he is the c.e.o. of serial tek a software maker and describes as an experienced plane. he is very meticulous about doing all of that. he is meticulous in all things he does. he is a good guy. >> the chefs in valley county idaho are leading the search and picked up a cell phone signal and narrowed it do four or five mile search with the transmitter designed to go off in crashes

and not been detected. ocean cueers dealt with heavy snow and low clouds yesterday with sunrise after 7:00 our time this morning. >> thank you. we continue to follow breaking news from boston where crowes are battling a 7-alarm fire that was eight alarms but downgraded. it break out in a large commercial building. it now is under control. the buildings what undergoing renovation. crews are evaluating the stability of the building. this were reports of people inside the building but they all made it out in time. >> now the deadly train derailment in new york city. the national transportation board does not know what caused the accident but the lead investigator says information from the two data recorders shows that train was going more than 80 miles per hour when it left the tracks, almost triple the allowed speed.

officials say the breaks were applied very late, only five seconds before it stopped. >> new video from southern california showing an actor stopping by the crash site where his "fast and furious" co-star paul walker was killed in a car crash. this happened last night with new reports saying a combination of speed and human error probably caused the crash that killed walk are and his friend who was driving. investigators are saying they do nut think the two were drag racing. >> bart's board is expecting a lawsuit from the agency's two largest unions over disputed family leave clause in the contracts it negotiated with the unions. it is a store we break on abc7 news last week, the security stemming from the board's removal of a clause in the contract that management signed but said it included it accidentally. the spokesman for the service employees international union says a final decision has not

been made about a lawsuit but the action will have to wait until the union completes the leadership election tomorrow. >> the west contra costa county school board is working on new bullying policies after an emergency meeting with parents last night. a tran gender student spoke up about being bullied at high school after her fight was caught on video. the board agree that existing policies are not enforced across the district so they are giving themselves 40 to 45 days to develop if you policies. >> it came to a point where i wanted to physically hurt myself. >> i take responsibility for that. i am sorry. >> the school district called the emergency board meeting after parents come--
